What Is a VCF File and Why Do You Need One?
A VCF (Variant Call Format) file is the standard format for storing genetic variant data. It contains information about your SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) — the tiny variations in your DNA that make you unique.
Think of it as a digital blueprint of your genetic identity. At ai Gene X™, we use this file to analyze your DNA and match you with your Gene Type.
Step 1: Choose a DNA Testing Service
Several trusted companies offer consumer DNA testing. Here are the most popular options:

| MyHeritage DNA | Ethnicity estimates + matching. ~9. |
| Nebula Genomics | Whole genome sequencing. Privacy-focused. ~49. |
All of these services allow you to download your raw DNA data, which can be converted to VCF format.
Step 2: Order Your Kit and Submit Your Sample
The process is simple:
- Order a kit online from your chosen provider
- Receive the kit at home (usually a saliva collection tube)
- Provide your saliva sample following the instructions
- Mail it back in the prepaid envelope
- Wait 3–6 weeks for results
Step 3: Download Your Raw Data
Once your results are ready:
For 23andMe:
- Log in to your 23andMe account
- Go to Settings → 23andMe Data
- Click "Download Raw Data"
- Confirm your identity and download the file
For AncestryDNA:
- Log in to your Ancestry account
- Go to DNA → Settings
- Click "Download Raw DNA Data"
- Confirm via email and download
For MyHeritage:
- Log in and go to DNA → Manage DNA kits
- Click the three dots menu → "Download"
Step 4: Upload to ai Gene X™
Once you have your raw data file (usually in .txt or .csv format), you can upload it directly to ai-genex.com. Our system automatically handles format conversion.
